Frequently asked questions

What is a dab nail, and how is it different from a banger?

A dab nail is the heating surface where you place your concentrate – it’s the “bowl” of a dab rig. The term originally referred to titanium or glass nails with a dome (a separate glass cover). Today, most people use bangers (quartz buckets with no dome), but the term “nail” is still used interchangeably. Short version: If it’s where you heat and dab, it’s a nail or banger.

What materials are dab nails made of, and which is best?

Three main materials:

Quartz: Most popular. Heats evenly, great flavor, cools down quickly for low‑temp dabs. Can crack if overheated or dropped. Best for flavor chasers.

Titanium: Nearly indestructible, heats fast, retains heat longer. Can affect flavor slightly if low‑quality. Great for travel or heavy use. Best for durability.

Ceramic: Excellent flavor, holds heat for a long time. Fragile – chips or cracks easily. Best for low‑temp, slow sessions.

Our recommendation: Quartz for flavor, titanium for toughness. Ceramic is great but handle with care.

What’s the difference between a domed nail and a domeless nail?

Domed nail: Requires a separate glass dome that sits over the nail. You heat the nail, place the dome on, then dab through the dome’s side hole. Classic style, but less common now.

Domeless nail (banger): No dome needed – the nail has a built‑in bucket or dish. You heat the bucket directly, then dab inside. Easier, more popular, and gives better low‑temp control.

Most rigs today use domeless bangers. Domes are mostly for collectors or specific glass art pieces.

How do I know what size dab nail to buy?

Match your rig’s joint size and gender.

Joint sizes: 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm (14mm is most common).

Gender: Most rigs have a female joint (hole inside), so you need a male nail/banger. Some rigs (especially smaller ones) have male joints – then you need a female nail.

Check your rig: If the glass joint sticks out, it’s male. If it has a hole you can drop something into, it’s female. Still unsure? Message us a photo – we’ll match it for you.

How do I clean my dab nail, and how often should I?

After every dab – or at least daily.

Quartz: While the banger is warm (not red hot), wipe with a dry q‑tip. Then dip a fresh q‑tip in isopropyl alcohol and wipe again. For deep cleaning, soak in alcohol overnight or heat until red and let residue burn off (this shortens lifespan if done too often).

Titanium: Heat until red hot to burn off residue, or scrape with a titanium tool. Avoid using on quartz – it scratches.

Ceramic: Wipe with alcohol after each dab. Avoid torching ceramic red hot – it can crack.

Why clean often? Chazzed (stained) quartz tastes bad and doesn’t heat evenly. A clean nail = better flavor, smoother hits.

What’s the best dab nail for beginners?

A standard quartz banger (domeless) with a 14mm male joint.

Why?

Quartz is forgiving and easy to clean.

No dome to lose or break.

Easy to learn low‑temp dabs with a carb cap.

Fits most standard rigs.

Pair it with a carb cap and a dab tool, and you’ve got a beginner‑friendly setup that even pros use daily. Start with a standard bucket – skip the complicated thermal or hybrid nails until you know what you like.
