A bong (also known as a water pipe) is a filtration device generally used for smoking cannabis, tobacco, or other herbal substances. In the bong shown in the photo, the gas flows from the lower port on the left to the upper port on the right.
In construction and function, a bong is similar to a hookah, except smaller and especially more portable. A bong may be constructed from any air- and water-tight vessel by adding a bowl and stem apparatus (or slide) which guides air downward to below water level whence it bubbles upward ("bubbler") during use. To get fresh air into the bong and harvest the last remaining smoke, a hole known as the "carburetor", "carb", "choke", "bink", "rush", "shotty", "kick hole", or simply "hole", somewhere on the lower part of the bong above water level, is first kept covered during the smoking process, then opened to allow the smoke to be drawn into the respiratory system. On bongs without such a hole, the bowl and/or the stem are removed to allow air from the hole that holds the stem.

Bongs Material:

Popular bong materials include glass, acrylic, ceramic and silicone.
Glass bongs are the most popular bong material on the market, since they provide the cleanest and purest taste. Bongs made from borosilicate glass contains boron trioxide, which has a very low coefficient for thermal expansion. This means its incredibly durable and will not crack under extreme temperature changes like regular glass.
Acrylic bongs are the cheapest and virtually indestructible. However, it makes for the least versatile, since it’s difficult to add-on accessories like percolators.
Ceramic bongs are durable and are behind glass for providing the tastiest hits.

You’ll need to take into consideration the size of your desired bong and how it’s going to fit into your lifestyle. Larger bongs and water pipes tend to be more expensive as well as being bulkier, making them better suited for use within the home. Joint Size:

Before you go buy a new bong that you need to know the joint size of your bong or dab rig. Bong joint sizes come in three different sizes, 10mm, 14mm or 18mm. The most common joint size is 14mm, you will rarely see 10mm joints and 18mm joints are usually only found on the biggest sized bongs. If you see anyone mention 14.5mm or 18.8mm joints don't get confused these are the same as 14mm and 18mm joints.

10mm Joint
Most often referred to as micro or nano joints, 10mm joints are usually only found on pendant rigs or the smallest dab rigs designed for extreme portability. A 10mm joint is easy to identify because it is extremely small.

14mm Joint
The most common of all joint sizes is 14mm. Almost all small-medium sized bongs and dab rigs have 14mm joints. To find out if your joint is a 14mm all you need is a dime. If the dime is about the same size as your joint its a 14mm. If the dime falls into the joint its an 18mm, and if the joint is much smaller than a dime you have a 10mm joint.

18mm Joint
Another common joint size, 18mm joints are usually only found on the largest bongs. This is to increase airflow since the piece is much larger. If a dime falls into your joint then you have an 18mm joint.

As well as the size of the bong itself, you’ll want to consider the size of the joint - this is the seal that connects your bong to its various accessories and pipes. Joints are measured in diameter and will only be compatible with accessories of the same size.

Standard joint sizes are 10mm, 14.5mm and 18.8mm and a larger joint size will generally offer bigger hits.
